Process Safety Engineer

Position summary
The successful candidate will execute process safety engineering deliverables on a Pre FEED basis, working within a multidisciplinary team environment. Key activities include:
- Execute major process safety deliverables in accordance with approved engineering procedures and design criteria.
- Prepare, coordinate, and review engineering designs, studies, and reports.
- Lead design development and coordinate across engineering disciplines while managing workload and schedule.
- Resolve complex design challenges including conflicting requirements and coordination issues.
- Plan and prepare equipment/work specifications, bid evaluations, and award recommendations.
- Coordinate engineering efforts between specialty groups, clients, suppliers, and contractors.
- Assist in on the job training of personnel and contribute to performance evaluations.
- Prepare and review conceptual/Pre FEED studies, designs, reports, and proposals.
- Support preparation of cost estimates, quantity take offs, and staffing requirements for proposals.
- Review and check work produced by junior engineers.
Key responsibilities
- Lead and manage HAZID, What If, HAZOP, and LOPA reviews.
- Conduct hazardous area classification, fire & gas detection system and firewater system design.
- Develop Performance Standards for Safety Critical Systems.
- Maintain Hazard and Risk Registers throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review and validate third party studies including: Fire & Explosion Analysis, Quantitative Risk Assessment, Facility Siting Studies, Emergency System Survivability Analysis (ESSA), Escalation Risk Assessments, and SIMOPS Risk Assessments.
- Support preparation and maintenance of the Safety Case / Safety Report for a Major Hazard Facility.
Qualifications & skills
- Recognised degree from an accredited university plus a minimum of 15 years of relevant process safety experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licence, IChemE Chartered Engineer status, or commitment to achieving this.
- Specialist knowledge in one or more of: HAZOP/LOPA, QRA, SIL assessment, consequence modelling, or hazardous area classification.
- Strong understanding of technical theory, engineering principles, and their practical application in design execution.
- Familiarity with major safety regulations and industry codes: NFPA, API, IEC, UK/European safety regulations (COMAH, DSEAR, PSSR, etc.).
