We are now looking for two individuals from offshore process engineering backgrounds to retrain as Specialist Inspectors and join us on a full-time, permanent basis.

- This role currently attracts an offshore market supplement up to a maximum of £10,000, which is non-pensionable and non-consolidated. It is subject to review annually in HSE’s October pay offer

This is a fantastic opportunity for offshore process engineering professionals to refocus their careers and take on an inspector role with our essential organisation.
You’ll be supported through a Specialist Training Programme (STP) to gain the skills and expertise required to become a safety inspector. Combining structured learning with practical experience, the programme will equip you to operate confidently within your specialist area.
From day one, you’ll be supported to get up to speed and build confidence in your role, with guidance from your manager, team and colleagues across HSE. You’ll also benefit from
ongoing professional development, with access to structured training and the expertise of those around you.
The Role
As a Specialist Inspector, after completing our Specialist Training Programme, you will help to regulate offshore oil and gas operations by providing inspections and assessments of offshore facilities.
Focusing on the management of major accident hazards associated with process plant, you will operate in a frontline capacity, assessing how risk is managed and ensuring that workers and the wider public are protected.
You will contribute to improvements across the sector, working as part of a multidisciplinary team, and applying your technical expertise to inspections, investigations and regulatory decision-making.
Additionally, you will:
- Assess safety cases, undertake inspections and determine enforcement actions
- Support investigations of incidents and complaints
- Prepare technical reports
- Provide expert evidence for legal proceedings
- Offer specialist advice on process safety
Please note, enrolment in the Specialist Training Programme (STP) is a legal requirement that you will be required to study for and successfully complete.
About You
To be considered as a Specialist Inspector, you will need:
- Practical experience and knowledge (equivalent to the role of Process Technical Authority) gained in an operational offshore oil and gas production environment
- Experience of leading or supporting investigations into incidents or high-potential events
- An understanding of relevant engineering codes, standards and industry guidance
- An understanding of plant and process design, including the hierarchy of control
- An understanding of the safe operation of plant, including maintenance activities
- An understanding of hazard identification and assessment techniques, such as HAZOP and LOPA
- An understanding of risk assessment and risk management tools
- An understanding of process safety management and associated frameworks
- A Chemical Engineering degree
- Membership of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
- A full, valid driving licence
Please note, this role involves travel, with an average of 2-3 night stays, 6-8 times per year.
