We are hiring an Adhesives Process Engineer for our Auburn Hills, MI site.

This position is focused on delivering innovative technologies that will allow the Adhesives business to aggressively capture large customer market share in future battery pack designs in the automotive industry.

The role supports the New Product Commercialization process by ensuring that all new products fit for purpose and have a defined process to enable successful scale-up to high-volume manufacturing. In this role, the Process Engineer will develop and define conditions and specifications to ensure quality of new products at scale, including raw materials, formulation, and process. Additionally, this role assists in troubleshooting problems, identifying root cause analysis for manufacturing process failures, and driving continuous improvement in the manufacturing of commercial products.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with R&D and MT teams, ensures the successful delivery of new products from development to commercialization through the utilization of stage gate processes.
  • Adhere to New Product Commercialization process to ensuring that all new products are fit for purpose and have a defined high-quality manufacturing process.
  • Assists in troubleshooting problems and identifying root cause analysis for manufacturing process failures and defines optimized solution plans to ensure that new products exceed cost and quality targets established by the business.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of process conditions and process specifications of new product, including understanding the influence of raw material inputs on finished product quality.
  • In collaboration with manufacturing team, continuously improves and optimizes process conditions and process specification of new product launches.
  • Provides expertise for off-site operations group during process-related troubleshooting issues and interface with all functions, particularly Product Development, Manufacturing Technology, Technical Service & Development, Research & Development, Plant Operations, and Quality functions.
  • Will lead in commissioning, start-up of equipment, and pilot-scale operations, including the transfer of technology to the manufacturing team.
  • Development of operating discipline and safe operating procedures for pilot trials with pre-start up reviews and addressing all EH&S issues.
  • Supervises and coaches’ junior team members.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with colleagues at all levels across technical functions.

Qualifications:

  • Education and experience must include one of the following: B.S. in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with greater than 5 years’ experience or M.S. in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with greater than 3 years’ experience.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt Project Leader or higher Certification is desirable.
  • In-depth knowledge and practical experience in mixing processes and handling of coatings, adhesives, sealants, or mastics, preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record to solve challenging chemical engineering problems. Experience in production or pilot production plants is desirable.
  • Ability to work with solvents, chemicals, and polymers, and independently operate machinery.
  • Knowledge and experience in Design of Experiments, Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, Statistical Process Control, and process optimization
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Ability to interpret data, develop hypotheses, and optimize process based on knowledge of formulation.
  • Effective communication skills to summarize, organize and present data, interact with managers, and team members with a diverse background.
  • Maintain a safe and clear work environment in accordance with company safety rules to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations.
