Materials and Technology Start-Up (Hydrogen Storage Test Rig)

 

Our client is a leading advanced materials start up, developing hydrogen storage technologies based in both Australia and the UK. Dedicated to building a mission-driven team, our client is committed to accelerating decarbonisation using nanoporous materials, carbon composite tanks and semi-permeable membranes.

 

Job Title and Summary:

Our client is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Lead Mechanical Engineer who will be responsible for providing design oversight, development, commissioning, and operation of a testing facility for a fully integrated tank system for hydrogen system. The test vessel will be fabricated offsite before being transferred to, installed, and operated by contractors in Harwich. The vessel operates at high bar and very low temperature.

 

Candidates must have a sufficient background in mechanical engineering, project management, and at least one or more of pressure vessel design, manufacturing, inspection and maintenance and related practices, codes, and standards. The post is available on a salaried 1-year fixed term contract.

 

Key Responsibilities:

-          Coordinate the delivery of multiple projects scoped to deliver carbon composite tank systems and balance of plant.

-          Lead the progress of projects funded by various UK government grant programs to meet project milestones.

-          Liaise with key contractors who will be engaged to conduct feasibility studies, design, procure, construct, and commission demonstration systems for hydrogen storage, comprising of the clients’ proprietary nanoporous materials and carbon composite tanks for testing and certification, ensuring timely completion within budget and ensuring compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations.

-          Provide oversight and technical leadership for project development from planning to delivery, including management and coordination of engineering consultants and contractors.

-          Lead the review of design specifications, drawings, and documentation for tank fabrication, assembly, and installation, ensuring alignment to project requirements.

-          Lead oversight for risk assessments and safety reviews to ensure that systems that are developed, by relevant experts, meet applicable safety, and environmental standards.

-          Ensure timely project reporting to management and project partners and comply with government grant funding requirements - this includes

supporting project planning, tracking, and reporting.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

Degree: at least a BSc in Mechanical Engineering

Experience:

-          Significant experience in mechanical engineering – Vessel design, manufacturing, inspection and maintenance, codes, and standards.

-          Project management: engaging with contractors, leadership to ensure projects are delivered on time and on budget.

Technical:

-          Design and construction of storage tanks.

-          Strong knowledge of relevant codes and standards governing the design, construction, maintenance, and inspection of tanks.

-          Project engineering and or management of the design, construction, and commissioning of a specialised plan.

-          Knowledge of carbon composite tanks.

Additional:

-          Analytical skills – data analysis and applicable software.

-          Stakeholder management – excellent interpersonal skills, internal and stakeholders.

-          Problem solving abilities – ability to identify and troubleshoot process issues.

-          Safety Focus – commitment to following safety protocols, including HAZOP.
