The business and site

Our site in Groningen is part of the world class Pharma Services of Thermo Fisher Scientific and we are looking for a new colleague for our Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MSAT) team. We operate in a sophisticated and highly regulated environment. You’ll do important work, like helping customers in finding cures for cancer, protecting the environment or making sure our food is safe! Pharma Services offers our clients a powerful platform for their drug development with technologies that are industry standard to state of the (including Single Use Technologies such as Single Use Bioreactors).

This type of facility has to follow rules and regulations of cGMP set by countries health and welfare ministries and with internationally harmonized guidelines that give guidance with implementing these rules and regulations.

Controlled production activities and compliance to cGMP rules, regulations and guidelines is critical for the suitability of the clients’ products and the license to operate for the site. The production activities have to be completed in an efficient and effective manner to assure the sites overall competitiveness. In addition, due to the very high value of intermediates and products, production activities have to be performed in a highly controlled fashion.


Your role

The Groningen site is a multi-product and multi-client manufacturing site for biopharmaceutical products across different phases of the molecule.

The MSAT Process Engineer II operates in a complex environment. New customer program introductions demand competitive speed-to-market, customer centricity and quality. Process technologies undergo constant development, so a pro-active attitude and open mentality are necessities.

  • (Support) Technical lead in the MSAT department, which consists of technology transfer across clinical and commercial phases, implementation of manufacturing processes, process validation, and advanced manufacturing problem solving.

  • (Support) Technical lead for site projects on innovative technology and current compliance standards.

  • Leverage on individual and network experience to make sound judgements on issues outside domain expertise, including cost-benefit analyses.

  • Conduct activities in accordance with cGMP and EH&S standards.


Keys to Success

The MSAT Process Engineer II is the face of process experts in Groningen and has competencies that deliver indispensable inputs on science, (process) engineering and technology. The MSAT Process Engineer II is often faced with multi-faceted problems in both internal and customer projects and operates in a multi-disciplinary team within Groningen and/or across the business network.



  • Recognized bachelor or master degree in one of the scientific subject areas relevant to the production of biopharmaceuticals (E.g. Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry).



  • More than 3 years of technology transfer experience in mammalian cell culture or downstream bioprocessing; Or

  • More than 5 years of hands-on experience in process development or manufacturing of upstream or downstream bioprocessing; Or

  • Skills and experience as deemed equivalent to the above.

  • Has self-initiative and is autonomous in time management and project management.

  • Comfortable to work with external customers in straightforward projects.

  • Has experience in navigating and managing conflicts.
