Job Summary

The Process Control and Automation Specialist Trainee works alongside other Process Control team members to provide boots on ground and first-line support for Selkirk industrial control systems. The scope of this support includes hardware, system software, and applications. The Trainee will successfully complete training, acquire experience, develop skills and competencies in an ever-changing technology environment while continually increasing levels of independence. 

The successful candidate will complete educational training (as required), on the job training and vendor training programs. They must demonstrate self-initiative in acquisition of skills – seeking guidance from team members, working closely with other site teams, contacting vendors, reading literature, self-learning, etc.

The Trainee will qualify for advancement to the G-level position of Process Control and Automation Specialist through completion of training requirements, demonstrated competencies, and satisfactory job performance. The Trainee is expected to successfully complete the training process within four years or less. Prior training and experience may reduce the required training courses needed for advancement to G-level.

This position may support work across all operating units on Selkirk site.

 

How You Can Be the Impact

  • Work with Operations and Maintenance to identify and remediate operational issues, including reading/interpreting application code to pinpoint problems. 
  • Execute process control Work Orders: Add / delete / modify DCS tags, new tag checkout, DCS console configuration, IO availability, DCS PMs, code interpretation and resolution, operator graphics changes, etc. 
  • Execute assigned Engineering Service Requests (ESRs) which range from small to large projects and include adding new points, creating control narratives, designing, and coding logic into DCS and/or PLCs.
  • Perform value-added activities including system back-ups, spare parts management, asset management, root cause correction, system health monitoring, PC hardware diagnostics, replacement, etc.
  • Support of site process control system infrastructure, including patching and upgrades.
  • Specific assignments in support of team projects and initiatives, such as procedure/standards development and preventative maintenance review/development.
  • Support execution of strategic plan for Tech Refresh (obsolescence hardware replacement)

 

What Matters to SABIC

  • Demonstrated personal commitment in safety, environmental, health, and security practices
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical and schematic wiring diagrams, and P&ID's.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform troubleshooting of instrumentation and electrical issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others outside your area of expertise to troubleshoot plant problems.
  • Demonstrated interest in learning aspects of industrial control – control system hardware, system configuration, control applications, operator interfaces, industrial communication protocols, etc.
  • Direct experience or familiarity with computer programs / code / scripting.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify value-added tasks and work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment, resolving technical issues and sharing knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form.
  • Commitment to timely completion of a structured training program to advance to the Process Control Specialist position. The training program includes vendor training (local and out-of-town), on-line training, college level courses (local), and on-the-job training. Demonstrated competencies will be required. SABIC Tuition reimbursement is available.
  • Ability to work overtime as required, including occasional call-ins and weekends.
  • Addition Desired Qualities (not required)
    • Direct experience maintaining industrial control equipment (DCS’s, PLC’s, HMI’s, etc.)
    • ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) certifications.
    • Post-secondary training: electrical, instrumentation, or industrial control.
    • Post-secondary training: computer science, networking, or programming. Microsoft or Cisco certifications.
    • Experience writing code that has been successfully deployed in a plant or business environment.
    • Direct experience configuring and maintaining Windows-based servers and PC’s.
    • Experience as an industrial Instrument and Electrical Technician.

 

 

 

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50 pounds.
