Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Engineer to join our Project Team, based at our Thornton-Cleveleys headquarters, in Lancashire.

More about the role

The Victrex capital programme is crucial to the success of the business, involving multi-million-pound investments in production plant, buildings, and upgrades at the site. As Project Engineer you will be responsible for the delivery and support for individual investments across the facility, which requires project engineering expertise at a professional level.

Victrex projects involve project management, engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) and commissioning activities. The Project Engineer is primarily responsible for the EPC and assists the Project Manager to ensure successful delivery of projects in terms of time, cost and quality.

As Project Engineer you will manage projects up to £1m in value to ensure cost; programme, quality and safety meet required targets. Whilst also managing engineering on larger projects involving multi- discipline teams (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation designers and engineers). You will organise design reviews and monitor construction standards to ensure that the quality of design and build is acceptable to Victrex.

The Project Engineer will manage the interface between contractors and Victrex so that technical and procedural issues, method statements, and access to existing plant are resolved. You will monitor the progress of contractors against programme and agree any corrective action; review contractors cost reporting against control estimates so that any significant deviations can be identified and appropriate action taken; and agree scope changes in contract prices. You will also audit and review contractor's organisation, systems, procedures, and performance to ensure that projects are executed safely.

Your Experience

We are looking for someone with a proven record of delivering projects within agreed timescales and budgets in a complex manufacturing environment. Recent fine chemical and utility plant site experience and experience of chemical sites and hazardous areas classification. The role requires you to have an understanding of engineering disciplines and to be familiar with design reviews, equipment purchasing and safe systems of work. You will also have experience of working for or with EPCM contractors.  Previous chemical engineering experience would be preferable.

Our ideal candidate will have efficient communication & organisational skills, be a good team player and have a completer/finisher nature. You will have good commercial awareness with the ability to analyse engineering documentation (often several volumes) and spot elements not in Victrex’s interest. We are looking for someone with the drive, tenacity and commitment, combined with the ability to challenge contractors’ positions.  You must be hands on and enjoy working in contractors’ offices and on site with the ability and willingness to travel in the UK and overseas as required.

A relevant engineering degree or equivalent experience is essential for this role, and chartered status is desirable.
