Technical Policy Manager (maternity cover)

Location: Rugby or London, UK

Salary band: £37,000 - £45,000 depending on experience

IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) is the global professional membership organisation for chemical engineers and process engineers.

Founded in 1922, the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) embraces over 40,000 members in more than 100 countries. We are a multi-national institution with primary offices in the UK and Australia. Our members are found in a wide range of industry sectors, and at different stages of their careers, from students and graduates in training through to senior Fellows at the very highest levels of leadership in business and academia. We provide connections to a powerful professional network.

IChemE is the only organisation that awards the internationally-recognised qualifications of Chartered Chemical Engineer and Professional Process Safety Engineer. We are working towards ISO 9001 accreditation with the goal of achieving certification in early 2019.

We are looking for a temporary Technical Policy Manager to join our Learned Society team. Reporting directly to the Director of Learned Society; you will contribute to the implementation of IChemE’s activity as a Learned Society. This includes support for the IChemE Energy Centre and leading IChemE's work on diversity and its policy contributions. This position will also play a central role in the establishment of the Learned Society structure, support for the Chemical Engineering Matters initiatives and the Institution’s business plan.

In addition to coordinating the day-to-day operation of the Learned Society function, you will liaise with scientists and engineers, academics and industrialists, government and other institutions on a broad range of topics related to chemical and process engineering policy.

You will be educated to degree level in a relevant science, engineering or policy discipline and have at least 3 years’ experience working in a technical environment with proven experience in project management. You will have experience managing a team of individuals across several office locations as well as being held responsible for the policy budgets, KPI’s and performance.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leading and managing the Learned Society function on a day-to-day basis
  • Overseeing the development and delivery of our Learned Society strategy
  • Providing leadership and oversight to the delivery of our technical policy outputs
  • Overseeing our work and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
  • Overseeing our medals and prizes schedule
  • Building and maintaining excellent working relationships with members, external partners and stakeholders

Due to IChemE’s international nature, this position requires a willingness to work flexibly and to engage in business discussions outside of normal working hours. The position can be based at either our Rugby office or London office and will require travel between these two offices plus to other stakeholder addresses within the UK where required.

This is a temporary role on a 12 month fixed term contract to cover a period of maternity leave. It is full-time based on you working 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

Starting salary will be in the region of £37,000 - £45,000 per annum (depending on experience) plus benefits which includes an excellent pension scheme and flexitime. For London based candidates an appropriate London weighting allowance will be applied. Only candidates eligible to work in the UK will be considered.

To apply; please provide a CV and a cover letter highlighting your experience against the areas listed above and why you think you are the ideal candidate for the role. To request a copy of the full job description or to formally apply for the position, please email our HR team: recruitment@icheme.org

(Please note that applications sent without a cover letter will not be reviewed)

The closing date for all applications is close of business Friday 26 October 2018, however, IChemE reserves the right to interview exceptional candidates and make an offer of employment before this date should we wish.

Interviews are likely to be held on Tuesday 13 November 2018.
