Valero Energy Corporation is an international manufacturer and marketer of transportation fuels and other petrochemical products. Valero, a Fortune 500 company based in San Antonio, Texas, with approximately 10,000 employees, is an independent petroleum refiner and ethanol producer.  With assets totalling $50.2 billion, we own and operate 15 petroleum refineries with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3.1 million barrels per day.  In the UK we refine, market and supply energy products to the world, as part of the Texaco brand. Pembroke is one of Western Europe’s largest and most complex refineries, with a total throughput capacity of 270,000 barrels per day.  We currently have the opportunity to recruit Process Engineers within the Technical Services Department based at Pembroke.

Main Duties

  • Provide daily, weekly, monthly advice on the performance of Process Units
  • Perform site surveys
  • Develop catalyst evaluation and decision support packages
  • Lead management of change and risk assessment processes
  • Support unit Process Hazard Analysis (PHAs) Studies
  • Participate in the Refinery Loss Prevention System
  • Complete monthly safety and environmental training
  • Liaise with Project Engineers to produce design/construction deliverables for various refinery projects
  • Deliver presentations to Refinery Leadership Team on areas of responsibilities
  • Working knowledge of instrument and electrical installations within hazardous areas to prepare for hazardous area reviews
  • Assessment of a typical documents including loop diagrams, data sheets, cause and effect tables, general arrangement drawings, location plans, single line diagrams, hook up drawings, interconnection diagrams, piping and instrumentation drawings (P&IDs) and processing of associated QA/QC test documentation
  • Address technical queries from multiple disciplines on-site and third party engineering service providers
  • Verifying “as-built” documentation post-construction

Candidate Requirements

  • Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent with Chartered or working towards Membership of the IChemE

  • Experience within the petrochemical industries
  • Familiar with the use of industry standards for the design, construction and development of procedures in the oil and gas industry
  • Process troubleshooting, safety valve sizing and refinery process design an advantage
  • Detailed technical knowledge of Refinery Processes and familiarity with the Oil Industry Regulatory framework
  • Knowledge of risk assessment processes for design and procedures
  • Experience of Emerson Delta V distributed control systems as an advantage, as is the understanding and application of advanced multivariable process control schemes
  • Understanding of the myriad normal every day Refinery economics that drive process optimization decisions from both strategic and tactical perspectives
  • Capability to provide technical support for safety and operational incident investigations
  • Steady state process engineering modelling such as HYSYS as a desirable skill
  • Hazardous area classification experience preferred.
  • Possess a high regard for the safety culture to which the refinery operates, driving towards an Incident and Injury Free workplace
