The Role

Position Purpose

What’s the role –

The Utilities Process Engineer provides process engineering support for the development on the front-end engineering design as part of Shell Geismar Expansion projects. Work involves aspects Outside of Battery Limits (OSBL) like flow sheet simulation, equipment calculations, safeguarding studies, generation of process flow schemes, preparation of equipment process and basic data sheets for a variety of process equipment, review of contractor work, integration of aspects into existing assets, review of project delivery aspects, and quality assurance.

The following are the primary accountabilities for the Utilities Process Engineer:

  • The position focuses on development of design package for the projects and the integration of the asset with the existing facility.
  • The scope includes the requirements to integrate the new Alpha Olefins (AO) unit, Poly Alpha Olefins (PAO) unit, and Catalyst testing unit into existing Geismar assets, working closely and coordinating technical development activities between on-site project team and remotely located design team.
  • Development on process deliverables for successful completion of Select phase and Define phase including technical assurance of commissioning and startup activities.
  • Responsible for high quality process design and engineering deliverables and provision of process services during CSU.
  • Alignment of the project design to the project requirements and the specific technology requirements.
  • Timely execution of individual milestones in accordance with the overall project schedule.
  • Support the overall team objectives.
  • Support implementation of best practices.
  • Adhere to all HSE, Group, Regulatory, Quality, and other applicable project standards.

This position interfaces with project and site stakeholders at all levels of the Geismar Chemical Plant.

Interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and ability to manage support for multiple projects with varying needs and priorities are critical to success in this position.

This role reports to the Technical/Integration Manager within the Expansion Department at the Geismar Chemical Plant.

The Geismar facility is part of Shell’s global Chemicals and Products business within the Downstream Portfolio and has been a cornerstone of Shell’s chemicals assets for more than 55 years. We leverage Shell proprietary technology to produce Ethylene Oxide, Ethylene Glycol, Alpha Olefins, Alcohols, Ethoxylates. Geismar has a long-term growth strategy, including new AO5 and PAO units and other future growth projects.

The Utilities Process Engineer will need to blend fundamental process engineering technical skills with a sound business understanding to provide the appropriate technical support, troubleshooting, and project support for Expansion projects. This role requires ability to collaborate with various disciplines.

Skills & Requirements

What we need from you –

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.
  • Engineering or advanced technical degree required. Chemical Engineering preferred.
  • 5+ years of technical experience, process engineering experience providing direct support to manufacturing operations desired, knowledge of utility systems a plus.
  • Self-motivated and works effectively with minimum supervision
  • Ability to interact effectively within the site and project teams.
