This posting is for an Operations Support Engineer providing technical support in dry gas processing utilizing the cold side equipment of our (OP2) olefins unit, as well as any site-supporting auxiliary systems at Shell Deer Park Chemicals Site.

What is the role

Primary responsibilities include short- term and long-term process monitoring, support process safety activities, support turnarounds and major maintenance activities, prepare/present technical knowledge for operator training, support abnormal situation management, catalyst selection, and support HSE compliance tasks.  Identifies and communicates issues to the appropriate technical and operations personnel. Leads or assists in evaluation of complex technical or operational problems. Assists as appropriate in problem definition and ensuring solutions. Provides technical documentation to ensure knowledge retention, continuity, and organizational learning. Provide support to long term strategy planning for the units/systems. Provides support and leadership to multidiscipline teams addressing cross organizational issues / opportunities.

The Process Engineer is expected to:

  • Provide day-to-day technical support to Operations in delivery of production plans.
  • Serve as Process Integrator when undertaking design activities for plant changes or projects.
  • Work as an autonomous Process Engineer, translates the guidelines and standards into practice and solves common technical challenges. Works within company standards and policies under defined directions while receiving occasional guidance on techniques. Makes recommendations and improvements to existing processes.
  • Ensures integration of related discipline activities to achieve delivery which is safe (all aspects of HSSE - personal/process safety and environment), fit for purpose and meeting cost-value optimization.
  • Independently manage the relation with multiple (groups of) internal and external stakeholders on a tactical level.
  • Conduct Short and Long-Term Proactive Technical Monitoring (Optimization, Margin, NEVC, Catalyst, Heat Exchanges, etc.)
  • Work with Process Models and Simulations
  • Track, Compile and Troubleshoot Process Engineering Material & Energy Balances
  • Track/Troubleshoot Product Quality issues
  • Complete assigned Feed Acceptance Tasks
  • Support Abnormal Situation Management (ASMs; e.g. S/D, S/U, Troubleshooting/Recommendations)
  • Participate or Lead Causal Investigations
  • Participate or Lead Management of Change (MOCs)
  • Complete documentation of key Process Engineering work/activities (Technical Knowledge Management)
  • Support Turnarounds and Major Maintenance Activities (i.e. Pitstops, MOCs, Procedure Reviews, Lookback, Scope, MEC, etc.)
  • Support or Lead Catalyst Monitoring and Selection Activities (loading/unloading)
  • Identify and Assess Growth Projects / Asset Integrity & Maintain Margin (e-SIP and follow- up support)
  • Support Process Safety Activities (PHA, RHA, etc.)
  • Support Projects
  • Lead or Support HSE Compliance Tasks (Environmental release calcs as needed, actions driven through PHAs, investigations, et)
  • Prepare/Present Technical Knowledge Training (to Operations)
  • Support Procedures Reviews
  • Lead or Support MTO Items
  • Work on end of the month accounting/closing (Chemicals and Utilities)
  • Conduct P&ID Reviews

The operations support engineer is additionally expected to:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Core Values: Value and Respect all people/Integrity/Customer Focus / Act for the Greater Whole.
  • Manage a diverse work list with varying length of timelines, varying levels of urgency, interrelationships, and varying stakeholders.
  • Be proactive, working closely with Operations, Maintenance, and Pressure Equipment Integrity to ensure thorough and complete communication of process issues at hand.
  • Facilitate problem resolution when the problem requires Process Engineering knowledge and expertise.
  • Ensure Process Engineering activities are conducted fully in line with Shell Group and governmental regulations.

What we need from you

Requirements:

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering is preferred
  • 3 years’ relevant experience
  • An engineer with prior operations support engineering experience as well as a proven track record of delivery in a fast-paced environment is preferred. 
  • Prior cold side olefins experience is preferred
  • Prior auxiliary experience is preferred but not required
