The scale of our ambition means that the technology department is looking for Process Engineers and Process Technologists at all levels.

Process Engineers (and Process Technologists) work closely with operations, inspection, economics & scheduling, Engineering disciplines & Contractors, and the project organization. They perform key roles in providing support for the production units through daily optimization & troubleshootingor giving assurance on the Management of Change process, process safety evaluations or developing and implementing projects. From billion dollar projects to set point adjustments of cut points our Process Engineers and Technologists provide a guiding hand to a vast array of activities taking place on and off site. Investments in all categories are being developed by process engineering professionals to improve the safety, environmental performance, reliability, and profitability of the Shell energy & Chemicals Park Rotterdam.

The Technology department comprises approximately 80 Shell staff across several different teams, the majority of which have a process engineering background. The teams are separated into 3 Process Technology teams supporting day to day operations of the Refining and chemical units, 3 Process Engineering teams supporting longer term project development and change assurance for the same units. A dedicated process safety team, a Utilities, Energy & CO2 team and a Business Opportunity Team. Many of our process engineers move on within the site to roles in operations or economics departments or further within Shell after rotating through a number of Technology/Process engineering functions.

The process engineering roles broadly consists of the following three categories:

  • Process Engineering Assurance
    • Participate in process safety studies (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, etc.) in design phase of projects or periodic reviews during operate phase, Lead process safety studies for plant modifications, test runs and (complex) work instructions
    • Participate in (or lead) PSSR (Pre Start-up Safety Reviews) for new projects or Turnarounds
  • Project Development
    • Conducting scouting and feasibility studies on proposals from Operations or Technology.
    • Project development in liaison with engineering contractors and ensuring end-result is supported by asset owner
    • Provide support to construction and startup.
    • Ensure proper implementation and performance when integrated into existing operating units.
  • Short & Long Term Unit support
    • Daily optimization of operating parameters together with colleagues in operations and the wider asset team
    • Contributing to process integrity of installations via proactive technical monitoring to ensure the safe, environmentally sound, reliable, and profitable operation of the units.
    • Developing strategies and tactics for the mitigation of threats
    • Provide support for preparation and execution of unit turnarounds. Provide ad-hoc support for unit trouble shooting and participate in turnaround work supporting a larger team.

What we need from you

Prior manufacturing experience is a benefit along with process engineering experience and experience with the development of projects. You are expected to:

  • Master ChE degree (or equivalent).
  • Proven track record in refining/chemical/utility plant process engineering on an operating site and/or design office.
  • Good knowledge of refining, chemical and/or utility processes in general
  • Critical thinking to use your external perspective to help us identify ways to improve how we work
  • Strong communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to cooperate with external parties (clients, Engineering contractors, etc.).
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the Core Values: Value and Respect all People/Integrity/Customer Focus/Act for the Greater Whole.
  • Manage a diverse work list with varying length of timelines, varying levels of urgency, interrelationships, and varying stakeholders.
  • Develop/guide lesser experienced team members in their development program.
  • Be proactive, working closely with Operations, Maintenance, Inspection, and the other SNR Engineering disciplines as well as the Engineering Contractor counterpart to ensure thorough and complete communication of process issues at hand.
  • Facilitate problem resolution when the problem requires Process Engineering knowledge and expertise.
  • Ensure Process Engineering activities are conducted fully in line with Shell Group and governmental regulations.
