The Role

Position Purpose

What’s the role –

This position is in Norco’s Technology Department and the primary function is to support the development and execution of Norco Chemical & Energy Park small capital projects.  The department supports both Chemicals and Energy (Refining) Assets.  The projects range in size from $0.2 to $25 mln and typically this role is responsible for eight to fifteen projects depending on size and complexity of the projects. 

One of the primary responsibilities is the development of the process design.  For low complexity projects (i.e. - equipment purchases, etc.) this position may have to obtain quotes, but will have limited if any responsibilities with purchasing and construction.   For larger more complex projects this role is responsible developing the project premise document, basis of design document, and validate the business case.  The primary responsibility for SELECT/DEFINE phase is to lead a process/project team to deliver a process design that will operate safely, be in environmental compliance, and meet production premises.  Throughout the life of the project this role is expected to fill the process engineering role for specific project deliverables such as reviewing and commenting on PFDs, P&IDs, equipment datasheets, process engineering representative on HazOp, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • This role will need to develop and finalize the basic data (flow rates, compositions, intermediate & final product specifications, pressure, temperatures, validate the business case justifying the project, etc.) and complete the other front-end deliverables necessary for the project to proceed into the next project phase
  • Prepare mark ups of PFDs and P&IDs
  • Develop the scope of work to be performed by the engineering firms for the various stage gates.
  • Is responsible for managing the integrated technical team to deliver the final process design. Ensures the process design team provides the necessary data to finalize documentation to safely maintain and operate the equipment.  Examples include:
    • Process Flow Diagrams and Heat & Material Balance
    • Line lists
    • Necessary equipment data sheets
    • Preliminary and final safeguarding studies
    • Flare impacts
  • Leads and facilitates resolution of key investigations related to process design.
  • Supports the Project Manager to align key stakeholders.
  • Will follow the project thru commissioning and start-up phase and will provide process/technical support through the life of the project.  (i.e. – P&ID and 3D model reviews, sign off line lists, participate in MOCs, participate in hazop, review new or modified procedures developed by the project etc.)

Dimensions:  

  • This position is accountable for developing and the leading the project team thru front end develop and is accountable for developing the scope of work, basis of design, and obtaining the necessary funding for the project
  • This position has no Shell direct reports
  • The position will also have technical assurance responsibilities for the process design
  • Leadership skills will be further developed. 
    • This role will be directing the process engineering team at the engineering office.
    • Will have mentoring opportunities
  • This role has many interfaces both inside and outside the site.  Communication, interpersonal skills, conflict management skills, negotiating skills will be further developed to manage the multiple stakeholders who have varying need and priority.
  • Provide accurate and useful feedback and coaching to others in a supportive and sensitive manner
  • Actively seeks out and listen to customer/stakeholder needs and perspectives and asks probing questions as necessary to ensure understanding

Skills & Requirements

What we need from you –

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.
  • BS in Chemical Engineering preferred, other Engineering disciplines will be considered with appropriate experience (i.e. – has done a process engineering role supporting operations or multiple projects)
  • 5+ years of supporting a (chemical or refining) manufacturing site with a broad range of unit experience is preferred.  The candidate should be familiar with the project work process. 
  • Have a great curiosity and no fear in asking the obvious questions.  This skill is necessary to develop the project scope.
