Outstanding applicants are sought for the post of Research Associate, in the Department of Chemical Engineering at University of Bath, who will carry out high-quality research leading to the development of a comprehensive model for optimising biomass value chains and the environment-food-energy-water nexus, on a project funded by the Newton Fund Programme and EPSRC/RCUK.
The overarching objective is to support Malaysia's aspiration to capitalise on its rich biomass resources to satisfy, in a sustainable manner, a significant part of its demands for energy, chemicals and other materials needed for improving the quality of life of its population. The aim is to apply mathematical programming techniques, supported by extensive data, to gain a holistic understanding of the complex interdependencies of biomass value chains with the environment-food-energy-water nexus.
The Research Associate will be part of a team of researchers who are developing high-impact large scale process and systems optimisation models and will collaborate closely with multi-disciplinary researchers from University Putra Malaysia, Technical University Petronas, National University of Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
The successful applicant will need to hold a PhD degree in an engineering or science discipline.
The successful delivery of the project will require the following:
- Experience in mathematical modelling and optimisation techniques, in particular mixed integer programming.
- Proficiency with optimisation platforms such as GAMS or AIMMS or similar software.
- Proficiency with GIS software.
- Understanding of biomass and bioenergy systems and energy systems in general.
- Understanding of the environment-food-energy-water nexus.
Specific duties for this role include but are not limited to:
- Conceiving, developing and maintaining an optimisation model for biomass value chains and the environment-food-energy-water nexus in Malaysia.
- Liaising with international partners to obtain suitable data for the model development.
- Developing and maintaining a database for the model.
- Designing case studies using the model.
- Performing analyses for opportunity cost, sensitivity, risk and uncertainty.
- Assisting with the organisation of international stakeholder workshops.
- Writing reports for submission to research sponsors and partners.
- Developing and maintaining a website to promote the project and disseminate results.
- Publishing results in high-quality peer-reviewed scientific journals, and giving presentations at high impact international/national conferences and workshops.
The post is full time (36.5 hours per week) and is being offered on a fixed term contract basis of up to 18 months in duration, starting as soon as possible, preferably not later than the 15th of February 2018.
