Engineer, Sr. Process Safety

Basic Function

The Senior Process Safety Engineer is a process safety leader for the LyondellBasell Channelview Complex.  The primary focus for the individual will be to lead the PHA and HAZOP processes at the Complex.  The individual will be a key participant in site PSM programs and will be expected identify improvements to existing programs and develop and implement improvement solutions. The individual will interface with a diverse group of customers including process and project engineering, operations, maintenance, plant management, HSE, and corporate process safety.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Manage, lead and coordinate PHA and HAZOP process and activities at the site.  
• Perform all functions of PHA/HAZOP leader, including facilitation, report writing, presentation, communication, and documentation updates.
• Manage consultants performing process safety work for the Complex
• Write and implement effective procedures that support process safety.
• Monitor and develop key process safety performance indicators and implement processes that drive process safety improvement.
• Participate in operational excellence (OE) gap analysis and external OE audits
• Understand regulatory and OE implications of incidents and provide guidance to site for proper classification, investigation, and improvements.
• Coordinate process safety knowledge sharing across the Complex.
• Communicate external process safety events to the site and share best practices identified within the company.
• Provide oversight and conduct Process Safety Audits. Participate in department P2E Activities, such as Process Safety Fundamentals.
• Lead or participate in incident investigations.
• Participate in company and external process safety technical networks.
• Track and report on action items from Process Hazard Analyses

Min. Qualifications

• Must possess a four-year applicable BS degree in engineering.
• Knowledgeable about PHA and HAZOP processes and supporting/related technical subjects and must have participated in and led PHAs.
  • Knowledgeable about design and application of Independent Protection layers (IPL).
  • Knowledgeable about Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA).
  • Familiar with Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) and associated Safety Instrumented System (SIS), Cause and Effect Charts, Control System Narrative and Safety Integrity Levels (SIL).
  • Familiar with Relief System design and evaluations.
• A minimum of 6 years’ experience in a chemical or petrochemical facility.
• Must have the right to work in the United States without VISA sponsorship.
• Knowledge of OSHA PSM and EPA RMP regulatory requirements.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and the ability to present complex topics in a concise manner.

Preferred Qualifications

• Chemical Engineering degree is preferred.
