We have an exciting opportunity for a Process Engineer - API responsible for designing and implementing manufacturing processes and supporting the design of utilities on a scale that can range from developmental pilot plant to full commercial production.

Ideally, the candidate has process design and operations experience in pharmaceutical facilities, which include biologic and organic synthesis Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and oral and parenteral Drug Products.

The candidate should have good experience of working with hazardous processes, such as the handling of solvents and chemicals, in a manufacturing environment. The candidate should have experience in all stages of a project life-cycle from feasibility to commissioning and validation.

This is a full-time permanent role based out of our Birmingham, UK office with a flexible arrangement – we’d like you to be in the office 2-3 days /week, unless you prefer to come in every day. Our office is conveniently located next to the motorway and a short distance from Birmingham International Railway Station.

 Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Lead Process Engineer with conceptual design deliverables such as Process Flow Diagrams, capacity analysis, Material and Energy Balances and technology selection.
  • Estimate utility requirements for new manufacturing processes, design utilities generation and distribution systems.
  • Generate Process P&IDs that include controls strategy and CIP/SIP functions, if appropriate.
  • Perform engineering studies for expanding, improving or automating existing facilities without supervision.
  • Produce specifications and performance data sheets for process equipment and instrumentation.
  • Assist with process design, taking in to account quality and EHS aspects of a manufacturing facility.
  • Generate safety assessments and Hazardous Area Classifications for facilities, and provide guidance to others regarding safety aspects that should be taken in to account during the design.
  • Make use of and participate in development of company design and production tools, including process simulation and smart P&IDs.
  • Assume ownership of the process-related aspects of a portion of a large project or an entire small project, and provide technical support to the design team.
  • Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with clients and members of the IPS design team. 

Here is what you’ll need:

  • Minimum of 10 years engineering experience and a minimum of 5 years in process design, preferably in the BioPharm industry, and more specifically within an API facility handling chemicals and solvents.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Biochemical Engineering.
  • Chartership with the IChemE or a similar professional association preferred.
  • Good safety knowledge with regards to handling solvents and chemicals – for example, generation of ATEX assessments, Hazardous Area Classifications and Basis of Safety documents.
  • Participation in HAZOPs for API / Chemical handling facilities
  • Knowledge of cGMP’s as they affect process design and equipment specification. 
  • Possesses a demonstrated ability to problem solve (with limited direction), effectively communicate verbally and in writing and manage time.
