The Reliability Engineer is accountable for the equipment reliability and maintenance strategy of process and utility equipment. This position will be responsible for the technical aspects of the maintenance program. This individual will work closely with operations, maintenance, scientists and engineering to identify and prioritize equipment issues. The reliability engineering will analyze equipment performance and identify actions needed to improve equipment reliability. These actions will be some combination of equipment design, installation, set-up, operation, and servicing, including reducing raw material and spare parts variability. Deep understanding of the manufacturing equipment, its processes, and the impact of the processes on the instrumentation/equipment are key to the success of this position.
This position is a role within the Bioprocess Research and Development (BRD) engineering organization supporting laboratory, pilot plant and GMP clinical supply areas. The BRD organization is responsible for developing and manufacturing large molecule drug substance in support of Lilly’s drug development pipeline. The BRD reliability engineer supports 5L benchtop scale to 5000L production scale reactors as well as process support systems.
Responsibilities:
Establish or maintain a series of reliability metrics needed to drive behaviors for improved equipment reliability.
Develop, implement, and maintain equipment maintenance strategies to optimize equipment safe operation, compliance, cost, and efficiency/effectiveness of assets.
Understand the area equipment and processes and the impact of equipment performance within the areas.
Utilize appropriate techniques and tools (root cause analysis, reliability centered maintenance, failure analysis) to reduce equipment related issues. Determine appropriate countermeasures and assist with the implementation of the approved countermeasures.
Improve the reliability of the installed equipment set by improving set up instructions, operating procedures (including automation sequencing), and maintenance procedures.
Support of design engineering for the selection and installation of equipment for maintainability and equipment availability.
Actively participate in safety-related activities (audits, job safety analyses, hazard reviews, etc.) to drive ongoing safety improvement.
Assist scientists/process engineers in determining causes of performance degradation of equipment as required.
Provide field support to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment issues.
Help determine spare parts identification and stocking strategy
Basic Requirements:
Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering or related field
3+ years reliability engineering experience and/or, 5+ years engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
Additional Skills and Preferences:
Working knowledge of Maximo/GMARS or similar equipment management asset systems (EAM) and Business Objects
Certified in RCM, FMEA, and/or RCFA facilitation
Working knowledge of Preventive and Predictive Maintenance techniques, including but not limited to Tribology, Vibration Analysis, Thermography, Life Cycle Cost Analysis, equipment installation requirements, etc.
Ability to troubleshoot equipment or process problems.
Proven ability to interact with a wide variety of individuals, such as shop floor mechanics, operations personnel, scientists, and management.
Strong troubleshooting skills/experience and a willingness to work with the equipment in the area.
Demonstrated logical reasoning, analytical thinking, problem solving, and systems thinking skills
Ability to make and communicate logical decisions using data
Excellent problem solving, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
Ability to read, write, and interpret technical documents and procedures
Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office programs
Demonstrated ability to work independently without close supervision
Demonstrated ability to work safely and improve the safety culture by personal behavior
Additional Information:
Monday through Friday 8-hour days with flexibility to provide occasional off hours support.
Occasional travel may be required for training, conferences, capital projects, etc.
