We are currently recruiting for long term career professionals, with an initial assignment supporting the Jadar Project. Jadar is a unique, world-class lithium-borate deposit near the town of Loznica in western Serbia. The deposit contains jadarite – a lithium sodium borosilicate mineral – and is the only place in the world where this mineral can be found. Our client, Rio Tinto, as part of their long-standing internal commitments, is currently engaging with suppliers and other key stakeholders to complete an internal feasibility study related to the project design, with Bechtel as the Project Management Contractor.

Position Summary

The Process Engineer & Safety in Design Coordinator is to assist the Project Engineer with the coordination of safety in design and process requirements during the FEED and Detailed Design phases of the Jadar Project.  This will require co-ordination with the engineering design and construction contractors to ensure the works proceed as per the project engineering plan.

 

Typical Responsibilities

 

Process Engineer

The process engineer is responsible for ensuring that the process scope of vendors and design contractors is developed in accordance with the Project’s scope and requirements. They perform the following activities:

  • Maintain and update the General and Overall Process Design Criteria.
  • Ensuring design contractors and vendors include all relevant process design activities and documents in their work plans.
  • Review process documents provided by vendors and design contractors for correctness and alignment with the project requirements.
  • Participate in vendors’ and design contractors’ model reviews at set project milestones and ensure the process action items from these reviews are fully closed.
  • Identify, challenge, and trend any changes that deviate from the project scope baseline and the facility scope documentation before proceeding with implementing the change.
  • Coordinate engineering efforts in assigned areas between their specialty (process) and other engineering groups or disciplines, with the client, suppliers, and contractors and between other groups with regards to Environmental and Safety Compliance during design.
  • Collect process related input data to the permitting team.
  • Provide technical leadership for equipment vendor packages as required.
  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.

 

Safety in Design Coordinator

On a high level, the safety in design co-ordinator is responsible for personal safety and safe working practices for the Project. They must understand and follow environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) procedures and contribute to safety in design work processes. In practice, the safety in design co-ordinator performs the following activities:

  • Develop, coordinate, and implement the Project’s safety in design program in accordance with Rio Tinto procedures, standards, and guidance notes.
  • Maintaining and updating the Project’s safety in design procedures.
  • Provide training to the Project team on safety in design, including obligations under Rio Tinto procedures, standards, and guidance notes.
  • Plan and organise facilitation for hazard studies such as HAZIDs, HAZOPs, design for safe construction reviews, and RAMBOs.
  • Guide design contractors in the development of their own safety in design programs and hazard study planning and ensure that they are in alignment with the Project’s safety in design program.
  • Ensure design contractors and vendors are performing all activities required under Rio Tinto’s process and functional safety procedures, standards, and guidance notes (e.g., quantitative risk assessments, dam break assessments etc).
  • Participate in vendors’ and design contractors’ hazard studies.
  • Facilitate the tracking and closure of all recommendations raised in the Project’s hazard studies.
  • Support the Project environmental engineer in ensuring compliance with Rio Tinto and regulatory requirements for environmental performance.
  • Perform other duties as required by Bechtel management.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • A university or college course degree from an accredited university in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering with extensive experience of progressive professional experience related to risk analysis and assessments, project engineering, system safety, and/or safety management. Substantial experience is required in at least one of the following industries/unit operations: Aluminum / Copper Refiner is preferred
  • Experience in Hazard/Risk Assessment processes.
  • Experience in developing and implementing system safety programs, including process safety management.
  • Excellent technical and managerial skills, with both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ambitious, energetic, self-motivated, self-managed, team player, and results-oriented.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Energetic and positive attitude working with multiple clients on a wide-variety of projects.
  • Team building, conflict management and resolution, and negotiating skills
  • Proficient in the process design of equipment,
  • Takes the initiative to coordinate the design development with other engineering disciplines while managing workload and meeting schedule due dates. 
  • Knowledgeable of and performs standard discipline engineering activities on projects with minimal technical oversight.
  • Demonstrated experience in process simulation and automation preferred.
  • Specific experience in planning and executing greenfield or brownfield projects in one or more of the following market segments: Natural gas processing including liquefaction and regasification, Coal, gas or biomass to chemicals such as methanol and ammonia, Petrochemicals such as HDPE, LDPE, MEG, PET, PTA, PVC and others, Carbon capture and sequestration, Solar and/or combined cycle power plants, Hydrogen value chain including reforming, liquefaction, transportation and fueling stations, Offshore and onshore pipelines, Desalination, raw water, demineralized water and waste water treatment plants, Familiarity with current
