Job Description

Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is seeking a Director of Process Engineer Center of Excellence (COE) for the global Life Sciences line of business to be based out of our Philadelphia, PA office. The candidate must demonstrate experience in delivering projects, from a process engineering perspective, for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry from product development through all phases of manufacturing along with a keen understanding of all the ancillary functions and components of a facility. The candidate must have experience in managing engineering and design personnel. The candidate must have experience in working with Business Development including experience in new client development and maintaining existing client relationships. The candidate must have strong communication skills and the ability to think strategically.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a world class process engineering center of excellence, COE, capable of executing work globally
  • Work in unison with the global life sciences line of business leadership to develop a strategic plan, that is in line with business projections; to attract, hire and maintain world class process engineering talent
  • Participate in strategic business development activities geared at growing the life sciences business. This can include client presentations to trade show involvement
  • Participate in proposal preparation and budget development
  • Develop and lead a process engineering organization/discipline that can provide global services to both current and new customers. The structure of said organization will be comprised of all levels of experience and include mentoring career growth plans and training of entry-level engineers
  • Develop and lead a team to work closely with the project manager to ensure scope, schedule, budget, change control, and quality parameters are met on the project
  • Develop and lead a team in the preparation of technical specifications for purchased equipment, as well as coordination with equipment suppliers and evaluation of suppliers’ proposals
  • Develop and lead a team that coordinates technical efforts between the process team and the architectural, piping, and automation teams on the project, as well as facility teams for civil, structural, electrical, HVAC, and environmental activities
  • Develop a team that manages the client drivers for the project, which include capital cost, life-cycle cost, impact on current operations, quality, and schedule
  • Develop a team that can participate in vendor coordination meetings, factory acceptance testing and integration of third-party single-use componentry.
  • In certain instances, the lead process engineer will be asked to follow the project into the field, providing construction, commissioning, and startup support while leading a team of engineers

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical or mechanical engineering, or pertinent degree and experience
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in process engineering design
  • Must have strong focused design experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries
  • Demonstrated understanding of interactions between process design with MEP and facility design efforts
  • Knowledge of system design, cGMPs, and applicable codes
  • Previous experience managing and developing engineers and designers
  • Previous experience in working with business development
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral skills are required
  • Excellent strategic thinking mindset and ability to interface with senior management
  • Excellent team player mentality
  • P.E. license is not required, but preferred
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally
