Job Description

Basic Function

As a member of our dynamic team, the Safety Engineer provides occupational safety and health support to the Morris manufacturing site by identifying and resolving safety related concerns and initiating improvement opportunities.  The individual in this position is responsible for compliance with state and federal safety and health regulations and LYB corporate standards.  They will interface with a diverse group of customers, including process and project engineering, operations, maintenance, plant management, corporate professional networks, and regulatory agencies.
 

Roles & Responsibilities

•    Support and provide direction to the site's safety and industrial hygiene programs.
•    Lead assigned site safety and health programs/systems, and propose improvements or corrective actions where deficiencies are identified.  Act as the trusted subject matter expert for their assigned programs.
•    Interact with operations and other plant personnel to ensure a consistent understanding of regulatory and procedure requirements.
•    Develop a basic knowledge of the production units and processes to which the regulations and requirements must be applied and be able to identify opportunities for improvement.
•    Adapt to the situation at hand and demonstrate a sense of urgency in bringing situations under control.  
•    Develop and execute action plans to mitigate hazards and proactively improve processes, including identifying necessary resources. 
•    Establish performance metrics, and monitor and communicate progress.
•    Effectively manage multiple tasks and meet commitments in a timely and quality manner, and support other team members to be successful.
•    Mentor less experienced safety and health professionals and co-op students.
•    Interpret and communicate regulatory requirements, effectively identifying solutions when rule ambiguity exists.
•    Act as a safety role model for all employees and contractors through their behavior and active participation in site safety rituals.
•    Actively participate on corporate safety professional networks as directed.
•    Represent the Morris Plant and LYB with professional organizations and regulatory agencies.
•    Be available on-call on a rotating assignment to respond to emergencies and other situations onsite.
•    Assume the role of the Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Manager in their absence, as needed.

Min. Qualifications

•    Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering or technical field is required; a degree in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or HSE-related field is preferred.
•    At least 5 years of experience working in a chemical or manufacturing facility, preferably in either a safety role or with significant safety responsibilities.
•    A professional HSE-related certification (CSP, CIH, COSS, etc) is a plus.
•    Experience interacting with OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
•    Must possess a strong technical knowledge of OSHA regulations and experience supporting life critical activities (confined spaces, fall protection, energy isolation, excavations, and hot work).
•    A working knowledge of industrial hygiene, incident investigation, behavioral based safety, and Process Safety Management.
•    Excellent communication, presentation and training skills to effectively interact with personnel across multiple levels of the organization.
•    Interpersonal skills and a willingness to spend time in the field developing strong working relationships with supervisors, employees and contractors.
•    Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with incident management and reporting information systems a plus.
