  • Harlow, UK
Plant Manager Chemicals

Job Description

£Attractive Six Figure Base Salary; Bonus; Car and Blue-Chip Benefits. Relocation Assistance.

The Company

Synthomer is a specialist chemical company and one of the world's leading suppliers of aqueous polymers, producing innovative formulations to support customers in a range of industries, from construction, through paints and coatings, to healthcare.

A FTSE 250 organisation, with its global head office in London, the business has grown significantly in recent years, through a combination of organic growth and M&A investment. In 2021 Synthomer generated revenues of more than £2.3 billion and an EBITDA of over £522.2 million. It has 4,750 employees across 24 countries, with 38 manufacturing sites, and four global Research and Development Centres, situated in the UK, Germany, Malaysia and USA.

Due to an internal promotion, it is now seeking a new manufacturing operations leader to head its key strategic site in Harlow, Essex.

The Role

Synthomer’s Harlow plant manufactures and supplies PVOH suspending agents for the PVC industry, under the globally recognised Alcotex® brand, and is part of its Industrial Specialties division. Producing about 18KT per annum, the Harlow plant is a lower tier COMAH facility, located at Synthomer’s former head office, with 100 employees in the production environment and a further 150 people employed in the group’s expanding functional support teams across HR, Finance, Commercial, R&D, and Regulatory Affairs.

The new plant manager will be responsible for leading the site’s management team, to deliver product safely, reliably, and competitively from the Harlow site. Accountable for driving SHE Improvement, you will also help identify and deliver operational efficiency improvements throughout the plant.

This position will be a great opportunity for the right candidate, especially with the long-term career development path available in a group of Synthomer’s international scale and ambition.

The Candidate

This is a role for an experienced manufacturing operations leader from the Chemicals and Process Industries sector, with a track record of leading a manufacturing plant of scale, and educated to degree standard in a relevant technical discipline.

A true people developer, you will have successfully led a programme of investment and modernisation to improve a site’s safety, production, and commercial performance. Driving OEE performance will be a particular feature of the role, and will require a strong appreciation of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement processes.

The breadth of representation on the site adds to its visibility across the leadership group, reinforcing the need for a manufacturing executive with the necessary gravitas and communication skills to engage credibly with everyone who works at, and visits, the Harlow facility.
