Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland

The Shell Chemicals and Products portfolio of assets is transforming into five highly integrated Energy and Chemicals Parks out of which Rheinland is a key player in the European market. It consists of the two locations South (Wesseling) and North (Godorf) and has started a major transformation program.
The sites will be transformed from a refinery and chemical plant into a Shell Energy and Chemicals Park of the future. It fulfils and supports Shell's energy transition goals and plays an important role in the energy transition throughout Germany and particular in NRW.

What is the role?

As a project technologist, you will work as the lead process engineer on our energy transition projects. The energy transition projects range from small projects having investments of a few mln$ to major projects having investments above 500mln$. The projects will be developed together with the Shell Project & Technology group and external contractors.

In the front-end phases (Identify and Assess phase) you are accountable for managing the project. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop the technical scope of the project

  • Perform competitive scoping exercises to ensure cost-competitiveness

  • Assess the investment economics together with the business group and writing investment proposals

  • Perform GHG / CO2 savings analysis and carbon intensity evaluations

  • Support process technology competitiveness assessment

  • Perform front-end process safety assessment (HAZOPs)

  • Support the screening of new evolving ideas

  • Write Basis for Design

In the later phases of a project (Select, Define, Execute) you will pass to the project manager and remain a key team member. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to the development of BDPs, BDEPs and other detailed engineering documents. This includes liaising with contractors and fulfilling the technical assurance role.

  • Lead the team through the Management of Change (MoC) process. The project technologist will have the authority to sign MoC for plant changes / projects. Hence, the project technologist needs to understand the full range of process safety management elements.

  • Identify and communicate applicable DEPs (design engineering principles) and other engineering standards to 3rd parties who provide engineering support and services to the site.

  • Lead the technical development and integration across disciplines and as well as scope optimization.

Requirements:

  • chemical / process engineering, chemistry or physics degree

  • experience (>5 years) in operations, process technology, process engineering and/or process safety in an Oil&Gas or Chemicals business

  • excellent interpersonal and relationships skills in complex environment

  • good understanding of refinery and/or chemical processes

  • experience in process and equipment design and safeguarding

  • project experience is an advantage

  • strong analytical power and communication skills

  • pro-active and creative in problem solving and a good team player

  • excellent writing and speaking skills in English; basic skills in German are desirable (and candidate must be willing to learn German)
