Job Description

Role Summary


We are seeking a new Director Position to lead the Sandwich Engineering Team within Chemical Research and Development (CRD) in Sandwich. The successful candidate will lead a team of engineers, chemists and technicians who are responsible for the application of chemical engineering principles and the use of data rich experiments to ensure the selection of safe and scalable processing conditions in order to deliver high quality materials from our manufacturing facilities.  The candidate will collaborate with our engineering leader in Groton, CT to balance workload, share expertise and ensure alignment and the use of best practices for key unit operations such as reaction kinetics, Liquid-Liquid extractions, distillations, agitation, filtration and drying within the function.  They will ensure timely support of projects of the Sandwich development portfolio and partner closely with the Sandwich Process Chemistry leads.

CRD, as part of Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecule within Worldwide Research and Medical  is responsible for the development of process technology for the production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient.   CRD managers engage in all facets of development from small scale synthesis in support of medicinal chemistry programs, to the development of the commercial synthetic route. CRD managers partner with manufacturing specialists for API synthesis in kilo-lab and pilot plant facilities, as well as provide oversight for technology transfer to Pfizer manufacturing sites and third-party facilities.

The successful candidate will lead the UK Engineering Group and will grow and develop the team through recruitment, goal setting, performance management and individual development planning. They will collaborate with managers and scientists from across Pharm Sci Small Molecule and Pfizer Global Supply to evolve our engineering tools and the role of the project engineer on development teams.  The team leader will partner closely with the Computational Process Design & Optimization (CPDO)  leader to ensure alignment on the use and implementation of modelling tools within the group.   The team leader will also be responsible for implementing Flexible API Supply Technologies (continuous) on projects and partnering with the FAST Director to develop technology transfer processes utilizing FAST technologies. They will be a strong people manager with a proven ability to drive performance and personal development of direct line reports and support our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.  This role will also serve as a member of the local Sandwich Management Team and partner with leaders of process chemistry, Global External Supply , Crystallization and Process Safety to ensure the smooth operation of the UK group.   



  • Manages and leads a team of chemical engineers within the process engineering group.  Will grow the team through recruitment while ensuring budgetary targets are met for expense and capital.
  • Has direct accountability for setting direction, deploying resources, and leading pay, performance, goal setting, and development discussions for the Sandwich engineering Group.
  • Provides technical and functional expertise to the Groton Process Engineering team, ensuring sound chemical engineering principles are applied in the development of processes for technology transfer.
  • Considered a subject matter expert in chemical engineering. 
  • Utilizes awareness of development portfolio priorities to assign resources & set priorities to ensure project deliverables.  Generates realistic and balanced forecasts for near, mid and long term engineering resource needs
  •  Ensures the scientific & personal development of all colleagues within reporting line which includes providing opportunities to identify new technologies for discipline
  • Conduct all Performance Management activities for direct reports. Provide critical evaluation of potential candidates for proper fit for open positions.
  • Accountable for the implementation of modelling principles and techniques within the Sandwich Engineering group to ensure delivery of Digital Design goals within CRD

  • Leverages a variety of communication tools and techniques to help colleagues understand how their work aligns to business priorities
  • Contributes to an open communication environment to ensure the knowledge and expertise of the Sandwich Engineering team is leveraged. ​
  • Partners closely with Groton Engineering lead and UK/US Flexible API Supply Technology leads to develop and implement FAST technologies on project teams





Required Education/Experience

BS/MS Chemical engineer with strong relevant pharmaceutical chemical engineering experience in small molecule API or PhD Chemical Engineer /Chemist with a minimum of 10 years relevant pharmaceutical chemical engineering experience in small molecule API.  Experience in the development and application of continuous platforms.

Required Technical Skills

An expert in chemical engineering principles with a proven track record of chemical engineering solutions for small molecule API. An expert in technology transfer and scaleup. Experience supervising small teams and the ability to develop and create a vision and strategy. Ability to lead in a fast paced organization and support the change curve of others. Contemporary awareness of the external environment with the ability to bring in new emerging scientific approaches to improve ways of working


Leadership Skills


Experience leading and motivating teams through times of change – excellent communication skills.  Ability to  influence the technical direction and future direction and workflows of the group


Physical/Mental Requirements


Ability to perform complex tasks with appropriate mental agility, including mathematical calculations and complex data analysis.


Non-standard Work Schedule, Travel or environment requirements

Will be required to occasionally travel internationally (0-10%) to support team goals.


Organisational Relationships

Will be an active member of the CRD Sandwich Management Team, will interface with leaders from Sandwich process chemistry, Sandwich crystallization, Groton Engineering, Computational Product & Process Design, Flexible API Leaders and both research and Pfizer Global Supply manufacturing areas. 



Financial Accountability



The position will supervise a team of  chemical engineers, chemists and technicians.
