Organization Overview:

The Process Engineering Center (PEC) is a group of skilled engineering practitioners who possess deep technical expertise and have access to appropriate lab facilities.  The PEC partners with plant engineers, site process engineers, Global Facility Delivery engineers, development engineers, HSE resources and scientists to provide rigorous technical solutions.

Key attributes include the following: Technical contributions based on first principles, delivering technical solutions with significant business impact across the site/network, influencing leadership through technical input across the API and Parenteral networks, improving engineering practices, seeking external perspective to solicit best practices, and mentoring/coaching site resources.

Responsibilities:

This position focuses on the many technical aspects related to the design, modeling, installation, construction, testing and maintenance of environmental control systems (ECS) at Lilly facilities.  Environmental control systems could include air emissions control systems (thermal oxidizers, cryogenic condensors), combustion systems (waste incineration or boilers), wastewater treatment systems, and other pollution control technologies (scrubbers, adsorption media).  Fundamental knowledge of material and energy balances, chemistry, thermodynamics, fluid flow and mass transfer is required.

  • Provides technical consultation to sites to support major capital projects for new ECS projects or major upgrades to existing ECS.
  • Assists sites globally with ECS technical evaluations, master planning, technology assessments, performance, wastewater discharge and air emissions testing programs, pollutant generation estimation, and specific problem resolution including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Provide modeling capabilities to aid in design or troubleshooting or necessary quantification of various parameters/pollutants; modeling examples include fluid flow, batch or steady state process simulation, dispersion modeling, etc.
  • Provides technical support for completion of Environmental Development Reviews (EDR --- an EDR is an assessment process which evaluates proposed drug synthesis manufacturing processes for environmental control needs and capacity impacts).
  • This engineering position is one of several in the PEC which includes technical and discipline stewardship for all ECS disciplines.  This role will provide discipline leadership, related to one or more ECS disiplines, such as wastewater treatment, air emissions control, combustion systems, or EDR preparation (including oversight of the related technical community, technology development, knowledge sharing and institutionalization, mentoring of junior talent, external networking, etc.) as well as support in other ECS media.  It is expected that candidates will have a concentration of expertise in one of the ECS disciplines and a fundamental knowledge of processes used for the other disciplines.
  • Understand external codes, reglations and standards that apply to Lilly facilities and provide technical support to Lilly environmental regulatory personnel in the influence of changes in these regulations, codes and standards.  Provide technical expertise to help ensure compliance with applicable regulations, codes, and standards.

Basic Requirements:

Education:

  • BS in Engineering (Chemical, Environmental, Civil)

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years experience in environmental pollution control systems (including design, construction, operation, testing, and maintenance).
  • Experience in the design and operation of Environmental Control System in at least one environmental discipline

Additional Skills/Preferences:

  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations to interface with Lilly environmental regulatory personnel
  • Experience in the use of modeling applications (e.g. Aspen Plus, Aspen Batch Process Developer, BioWin, OLI studio, AFT Fathom)
  • Knowledge of the pharmaceutical product development process is helpful
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • The successful candidate will frequently work independently and, as such, must be a self-starter and capable of working with little direction
