YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

The primary responsibilities of this role, Senior Process Safety Engineer, are to: 

 

  • Lead and document Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and process safety reviews utilizing HAZOP, what-if and checklists methodologies for capital projects and in support of five-year revalidations for Bayer sites;
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of the “best practice” safety concepts for Bayer manufacturing processes;
  • Assist in the effective deployment of technical resources and influence actively department and division process safety goals,
  • Support building of the core competency of the process and plant safety group in all areas of process safety and risk management and process safety engineering methods and tools;
  • Demonstrate mastery and ability to make independent decisions in multiple areas of process safety engineering (i.e., PSM, RMP, PHA, RCA, LOPA, SIL verification, consequence modeling, risk analysis, etc.);
  • Collaborate regularly with site safety groups and with senior global process and plant safety peers and colleagues to develop comprehensive solutions by using experience exchanges, cross-training and short-term rotational assignments;
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of recognized and generally accepted good engineering practices (RAGAGEP) and process safety related government and industry standards (i.e., OSHA, NFPA, ASME, EPA and API) and chemical process safety, set level of technical and regulatory requirements for Bayer at multiple locations;
  • Participate in process safety audits for compliance to Bayer policies at plant sites throughout North America (NA) region;
  • Prepare and update PSM guidelines to assure compliance with OSHA, EPA local, state and insurance regulations and requirements;
  • Support corporate, site-wide and departmental process and safety goals by working in close cooperation with engineering and site operations;
  • Represent Bayer on relevant trade associations (e.g., Chlorine Institute, CCPS, etc.), technical conference and university consortiums;
  • Drive the quality of process safety engineering for the group and within the Bayer process and plant safety community;
  • Participate in recruiting, mentoring and development of junior engineers in developing process safety knowledge.

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with at least six years of relevant experience in the Chemical, Petrochemical or Pharmaceutical industry;
  • Master’s degree in Engineering with at least four years of relevant experience in the Chemical, Petrochemical or Pharmaceutical industry;
  • Good English language skills, written and oral;
  • Good Analytical and problem solving (decision making) skills;
  • Collaborative team player capable of working well with people across all hierarchies;
  • Excellent understanding of chemical engineer fundamentals (chemical reactions, unit operations, process control concepts);
  • Ability to analyze highly integrated processes based on process documentation (PFD, P&ID);
  • Demonstrated leadership and people skills to work in teams;
  • Ability to communicate (both written and verbal) effectively and promptly with all levels of the organization;
  • Willingness to travel (20-50% of work time).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Previous experience in pressure or process and plant safety.
