Senior Process Engineer

The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is leading the UK`s advancement of Nuclear Fusion and is expanding to meet the exciting challenge of making fusion viable. We are seeking applicants to join this unique opportunity of contributing towards producing carbon-free energy using nuclear fusion.
The Senior Process Engineer role will work on the Active Gas Handling System (AGHS) of the Joint European Torus (JET), and is the facility that delivers, collects and processes hydrogen isotopes, including tritium, the key fuel of the fusion reaction. The UKAEA is also designing and building a new Processing Facility (Hydrogen 3 Advanced Technology Facility - H3AT) which will become a world leading facility for the advancement of Fusion Fuel Cycle technologies.
We are looking for a number of Senior Process/Chemical Engineers to provide technical leadership for the advanced engineering in operating, maintaining, upgrading and designing process systems across a number areas, as well as leading the design of a new processing facility. These technical areas include:
- Fuel Cycle Outer Loop - Mechanical Forevacuum, Exhaust Detritiation System, Over Under Pressure System, Exhaust Monitoring System.
- Fuel Cycle Inner Loop - Cryogenic Forevacuum, Intermediate Storage, Impurity Processing.
- Isotope Separation - Gas Chromatography, Cryogenic Distillation, Water Detritiation System, Tritium Decanting Facility.
- Gas Analysis and Distribution - Analytical Laboratory, Product Storage, Gas Distribution and Introduction.
Key accountabilities/responsibilities include:
- Provide specialist / deep technical knowledge and direction in the relevant technical area (listed in bold above), influencing the work of the Authority, international programs (EUROFusion, ITER, DEMO), and working with commercial partners.
- Leading teams to maximise engineering output whilst ensuring all the relevant health, safety and quality requirements are met.
- Role model the safety and quality behaviours expected by UKAEA and ensure challenge and resolution on any non-compliant behaviours.
- Lead a team of professional engineers to develop the right culture and capabilities in order to operate, maintain, upgrade, and design credible systems within the relevant technical area.
- Strategic planning for the team, ensuring future requirements for the active gas handling systems and the new H3AT facility are adequately supported.

The UKAEA hosts and manages the JET nuclear fusion energy experiment on behalf of the EU and is also home to the UK`s MAST-U fusion energy experiment. UKAEA also works with industry and other third parties to develop new technologies currently in Remote Handling and Materials research. Following recent UK funding two new centres of excellence in tritium fuel handling and component testing and validation are being built. Knowledge skills and experience
- Experience is required in one or several disciplines amongst the following:
Design, commissioning and operation of process plant
Cryogenics down to 4K
Understanding of a variety of analytical techniques (e.g. mass spectrometry, gas chromatography)
Understanding of Isotope Separation techniques
HAZOP studies and design reviews
- Leading and managing teams of more than 5 engineers.
- Chartered member of a professional body.
The job holder will be act as an Operation Engineer during 24hr operations of the AGHS, for limited duration to support JET operations.
Active involvement representing the Tritium Process Group to the wider tritium/fusion research/industrial community e.g. Tritium Users Group (TUG)
- The normal working hours are 8.15 to 16.30, Monday to Friday. However, as a senior engineer there is a requirement to cover shifts during operations; therefore, shift work will be required a certain periods throughout the year.
- You will be required to work in beryllium and radiation-controlled areas. All necessary training and registration for this will be provided by UKAEA.
