IChemE Safety Centre: Deputy to the Director
Location: Rugby, Warwickshire, UK
Salary is dependent upon experience

IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) is the global professional membership organisation for chemical engineers and process engineers.

With a membership exceeding 44,000 members in over 120 countries, and offices in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia; IChemE is striving to be the organisation of choice for chemical engineers. We promote competence and a commitment to best practice, advance the discipline for the benefit of society and support the professional development of our members. We are the only organisation licensed to award Chartered Chemical Engineer and Professional Process Safety Engineer status.

The IChemE Safety Centre (ISC) works to advance process safety across a wide range of process industries, exchanging knowledge and good practice and leading collaborative work among its member companies and organisations. The ISC is based in our Melbourne, Australia office, but as a result of successful global extension of its work additional resources are needed to manage activities in other regions.

IChemE is looking for a deputy to the director to lead the IChemE Safety Centre on a day to day basis in the UK, Europe, Africa and Middle East regions. The successful candidate will drive the ISC process safety technical agenda and associated work programmes; securing the engagement and continued support of further sponsoring organisations, whilst driving revenue generation via ISC membership and diversification of our CPD, training, conference and publications portfolio in this area in order to fund and expand our process safety work.

Ideally you will have a chemical engineering degree and be a recognised process safety practitioner with management experience in site level accident and hazard risk in the process industries. You will also have experience of leading, managing and influencing others and be an excellent communicator at all levels.

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Supporting members in the specified regions, working with IChemE and member company staff to define, plan and implement agreed process safety work programmes.
  • Managing the ISC working groups to ensure they deliver outcomes in a timely manner, as well as managing external specialist resources as part of delivering activities where required.
  • Contributing to the forward planning and strategy for the ISC.
  • Acting as an internal specialist and advocate for process safety related issues.
  • Promoting process safety products and services.

IChemE’s international nature means that this position requires a willingness to work flexibly and to engage in business discussions outside normal working hours. The position is based at our Rugby, UK office. Some travel will be required within the UK, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

This is a full-time role based on 37.5 hours per week but the successful candidate must be willing to work flexibly.

IChemE will offer an attractive starting salary (depending on experience) plus benefits which includes a very generous pension scheme and flexitime. Only candidates eligible to work in the UK will be considered for the role.

To apply; please provide a CV and a cover letter highlighting your experience against the areas listed above and why you think you are the ideal candidate for the role. To request a copy of the full job description or to formally apply for the position, please email our HR team at:

Applications must be sent with a cover letter.

The closing date for all applications is close of business Friday 3 February 2017.
